Mangrove Isles Around Boca Chica

We went up inside the island via a small waterway running through it. We could only go so far before we ran out of water but is was so different inside. It was quite smelly but there was so much life inside there. There was also a sunken boat, apparently washed in during a hurricane. David saw several small nurse sharks so it must be a shark birthing ground too. On a hot summer day this would be a very cool place to beat the heat if you were a fish or a bird who didn't mind the smell of your own poo.

These are pictures from one of the small islands just out from the Boca Chica marina. We took the dingy out to explore the largest one. It is a roosting area for several types of birds, mostly pelicans and cormorants. The evidence of their favorite roosting areas is seen in their poop trails.

Our friend, Bill, loaned us his ingenious device of a bucket with the bottom cut out and a piece of plexiglass glued in place. You can see quite a bit with the thing and we really enjoyed using it. These are some of the medium sized fish that were feeding inside the mangrove island
