The Dry Tortugas-Fort Jefferson

Fort Jefferson is a truly amazing place. It pretty much covers then entire Garden Key island. It is the largest brick structure in the Western Hemispere and one of the largest in the world. More amazing is that is was never finished!! Technilogical advances made it obsolete before it was completed. It is also home to some of the prettiest corals and tropical fishes in the U.S. It was the closest to Okinawan diving since Okinawa. The fort is a part of the Dry Tortugas National Park and can only be reached by boat or sea plane. There are daily excursions out of Key West and you can stop and camp overnight. It is very primitive for visitors. You have to bring all your own water and supplies and take your trash with you. You are also too far for anything but a sat phone or SSB so you're cut off from communication. In an emergency the park staff will help you out. More on that when I recharge the battery on the laptop. Once you run out of holding tank space, water, or space to store your gargabe, it's time to leave. It is definitley the highlight of our trip so far.
