Out to the Marquesas

The Marquesas are basically a group of low lying sand banks about 25 miles west of Key West. It made a nice stopping point for our trip out to the Dry Tortugas. Evidence of Cubans trying to reach the U.S. was found with several beached "vessels" found on the beaches. It is hard to imagine wanting to leave a place so badly that you trust you life in one of these things. They are basically screwed together plates of whatever metal can be found. Some were filled with that spray foam stuff to keep them bouyant or had flotation things lashed to their sides. Some had old car engines with homemade props and tillers. Very scary to cross 90 miles of possibly treacherous water!
