This is a spot we have wanted to visit but never made the time. Today was the day. It has a unique history in the development of the keys. Henry Flagler decided to build this impossible railway from Miami to Key West. A staging area was needed to complete the middle and lower section of the road and pigeon key was it. The entire story of the making of the road and its subsequent transformation into a auto road is well worth reading. My Aunt Carolyn and Uncle David made the trip with my three cousins in a cabover camper, in think in the 70s down to Key West. The old road is very narrow and I can only imagine the nerve wracking drive across all this open water in a car full of kids heading out for vacation. I was always jealous of the traveling and exotic locations so it is extra special to see some of those exotic spots for myself. If you notice in the pictures, we had beautiful sunshine for most of the trip then there was a rapid buildup of clouds and our streak of staying dry came to an end. The ride back from the key was about 6 miles and it starting raining almost immediately. Oh well, it was a good run while it lasted. It was important to us to ride the old road since it may be closed for even foot and bike traffic in the future. It is amazing that the foundation has been able to keep it in good enough repair to be open at all. If you want to learn more here is a link to the Pigeon Key sight.
