The gap between the old and the new bridge. The original 7 Mile bridge was
considered the 8th wonder of the world when completed.

They took out a section to make sure no one would be tempted to sneak on the old
roadbed.
Exit ramp to pigeon key. No motorized traffic is allowed due to the deterioration of the
bridge structure.
The bridge. The ferry dock is in the background. Note the beautiful blue sky.
The everpresent ibis. They are all over the keys.
All of the buildings on the island are over 100 years old. You can tell the dedication
of the volunteers to keep them in good repair. This houses the museum.
This was called a note tree. The leaves are strong enough that people who came to visit
could leave a written note on a leaf is no one was home.
Interior of the old painter's cottage. It is now used for summer camps. It was very
spacious for the time with several bedrooms and sitting area and kitchen.
This is from the old road. When it was turned from a railroad to a auto road, the old
rail ties were used for guardrails. Very thrifty use of resources.
Another caretaker cottage. This one is available for weekly rental.
This is the old exit ramp. It is wooden and not in great shape. Note the usual
storm clouds. This was only about a half hour after the picture above.
The concrete roadbed was poured on top of the old railbed. The concrete from the late 1930s hasn't
fared as well as the concrete from 1912.
Girdling the pylon to maintain structural integrity.
A volunteer cottage. You don't get paid but you do get a place to stay.

On the ferry ride out.
