Crooked Island
We had a great sail from the Panama City Marina to a nice spot behind Crooked Island. The winds were enough to keep our attention but not so bad as to make us anxious. That was saved for the trip in between the sand spits that border the entrance to the opening. We were with Theresa and Dave Sampson on their boat, Carina. We've enjoyed cruising with them on other club flings and this was no different. We toasted Pops and Nanny, David's maternal grandparents. Pops is keeping tabs on us from heaven and Nanny from Chicagoland. Pops is the main reason we're out on our boat. He had a sunfish available during summer visits to Lake Michigan. This allowed David to start his love affair with sailing. One end of the island is a bird sanctuary and you can see a wide variety of birds including osprey. We enjoyed a great walk all around the non-restricted part of the island followed by a great dinner in great company. We started off with an early departure to beat the coming rain. We made it to Port St. Joe Marina, one of the friendliest on the coast and joined up with other Spring Flings boats that had made it in earlier. Again, more great food and socializing. The weather has been nonstop rain so we're staying put another day before pushing on to Appalachicola. That's the nice part of not being on a schedule, bad weather just means more reading!!
