Great Harbor Cay

This has been a very intersting and worthwhile stop. We are in a marina that is very nice for the Bahamas.  The town of Bullock's Harbor is a smaller, less prosperous version of Bimini.  It has nice people as always but not much else.  There is, however, a lot more foreign built houses along the coast lines that are actually habitable.  This is refreshing to see.  We have seen so many failed ventures that it becomes depressing after a while.  Such nice people deserve better somehow.  We did see a lot of decay and abandonment, but more surviving properties than before.  I think it may be the proximity to the states making the difference.  People are a day's journey by boat to come and enjoy their vacation property.
These coconut palms were on a secluded beach we found while adventuring down a dirt road.  They make such a pretty sight against the clearing sky.

This is five pirates bay.  A shallow area that our marina is a part of.

This beach club has a great cheeseburger and it's on the ocean side of the island.  It's not in great repair but its open.

We rode our bikes all over today.  This is at the government dock area of Bullock's Harbor.  It is the only settlement on the island.

Some group set up a golf course with a huge club house and other amenities.  The course is all that is still useable.  The greens and fairways are basically mowed weeds but we did see several people playing.

This tree had been blown over but still trying to survive.

As usual, our floating home is not the biggest boat in the marina.

We want to come back and snorkel this beautiful little cove.  We have learned that there are many just like it aroud the island.  I can see why people come here for their entire time in the Bahamas.

This marina is well kept and cared for with showers and a laundry.  At this point, it's fabulous!

We found this turtle skeleton while beachcoming.  The shell has long since been claimed.

We were talking to the gentleman on the boat next to us and my bike ended up in this canal.  The wind or inattention or just crummy luck.  Happily it was retrieved, washed off and still good for a day of exploring.

There isn't a lot to the town but the sign was easy to read!

If you look closely, you'll see 4 differnt colors of the same type of  flower.  Just gorgeous.

  1. Hi!

I am currently working on populating the Bahamas Geotourism website (www.bahamasgeotourism.com) points of interest directory with descriptions and photos. Do you mind if we use photos from your site here http://sanctuarysadventuresouth.blogspot.com/2013/02/great-harbor-cay.html of Bullock's Harbour?
Of course you will be credited, just let me know which name to put on the credits.

    Would appreciate the help.

    Thanks much,

    Nekia
